PADSTOW
This is one of the most attractive seaside towns anywhere in Cornwall with its picturesque streets and pretty harbour,
which once was the fourth most important port in the country. It lies a little way up the stunning Camel Estuary and is the gateway to magnificent cliff and estuary walks. There are many interesting art galleries and shops, as well as some fine restaurants, pubs and cafes. Rick Stein, the well known TV presenter and restauranteur, has his famous fish restaurant right on the harbourside. Padstow has its own glorious and original early 20th century cinema, open only in the holiday season but nevertheless showing up to date films.
Close by Padstow is Prideaux Place, one of this country's most beautiful Elizabethan mansions which is privately owned, but is still open to the public.
RIDE OR WALK THE CAMEL TRAIL.
Hire a bicycle and ride over the triple span girder bridge
and alongside the River Camel on the old railway trackbed,
and see some of the most beautiful scenery as you pedal (or walk) towards the old town of Wadebridge some 5 miles distant. If you feel energetic then continue to follow the trackbed and trail along the river and through the wooded countryside to Boscarne Junction where you'll find the newly
re-opened station to where steam trains regularly run during holiday periods. Continuing on from here will bring you (via the odd tea shop in the woods) to Bodmin, or if you take the left fork just outside Bodmin then you'll go up through the wooded hillside to an old china clay mine at Poley's Bridge. The total distance from Padstow to Poley's Bridge is some 17 miles each way.
WADEBRIDGE.
A rural town with its much altered medieval bridge which provided the first crossing of the River Camel. It is the home to thel Royal Cornwall Agricultural Show and the annual Folk Festival. The wide variety of shops here cater for all tastes, alongside the many art galleries, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Wadebridge has its own 72 year old Regal cinema, which has since been modernised into a 2 screen theatre.
LANHYDROCK, near Bodmin.
The grandest house in Cornwall, dating originally from the 17th century but rebuilt after a fire in 1881, Lanhydrock is set in 450 acres of superb woods and parkland running down to the River Fowey. It is encircled by beautiful formal and woodland gardens which lead into this 50 rooms on show house, giving an extraordinary glimpse into the life of a Victorian country residence.
BODMIN AND WENFORD RAILWAY, Bodmin.
Experience the golden age of steam
on this preserved railway which runs from Bodmin Town to Coleslogget Halt and on to Bodmin Parkway where it joins the main line. The route takes you through wonderful countryside, and for the steam buffs there are some spectacular gradients the engines have to work on the return journey. Alternatively take the train from Bodmin to the recently re-opened Boscarne Junction where it meets the Camel Trail. Or why not do both for a great day out.
THE EDEN PROJECT, Bodelva, St. Austell.
Here are the most incredible global gardens set around and under 8 space age geodesic domes making up two biomes,
placed in a fifty metre deep former china clay pit crater the size of thirty football pitches. These are the world's largest greenhouses giving a fascinating insight into the world of plants and people. The two biomes have totally different climates, one being a Warm Temperate and the other Humid Tropics, the latter being absolutely spectacular in its grandeur. Of all the places to visit in Cornwall this has to be a must, a total priority - nothing less.
