LOCAL WALKS
A twenty minute clifftop walk from Carne Crest northwards
along this stunning and beautiful coastline brings you to Carnewas Island and mine, and the starkly beautiful and legendary BEDRUTHAN STEPS,
supposedly created by a giant walking the coastline. You can, at low tide, go down the many steps to this long and sandy beach to walk or explore the caves. Or you could stop at the top for a drink or a meal at the National Trust Teashop and afterwards visit the National Trust shop next door for souvenirs.
A thirty to forty minute coastal walk south towards Newquay and over Beryl's Point brings you to WATERGATE BAY.
Here you can find the EXTREME SPORTS ACADEMY which offers a wide range of sports and activities for all ages and abilities. You can surf the waves, go kite surfing, or land yacht the two and a half mile long beach, go wave skiing, buggying, or mountain boarding. Surf equipment may be hired.
For those of you who prefer a gentler life but still want to watch these exciting activities you can eat and drink at the BEACH HUT BISTRO AND BAR which specialises in fish meals, and then relax upon the beach under, what we hope, will be a warm and pleasant sun.
For those of you who wish for more country views you can walk from Mawgan Porth beach inland, along the Vale of Lanherne for some two miles to the pretty village of
ST. MAWGAN where you can discover many old and quaint buildings such as the Parish Church,
The Convent of Lanherne, St. Mawgan Village School, the village post office and shop which has a delightful adjoining tea room serving homemade food including the famous Cornish Cream Tea. The Falcon Inn is within a stones throw, as is the ancient ford with the old bridge over it.
Whilst in St. Mawgan you may like to visit the Japanese Garden and Bonsai nursery.
This tranquil garden is set in one and a half acres, and has a beautiful water garden stocked with koi carp and other exotic fish. A pleasant woodland walk takes you through the Zen garden and bamboo grove and culminates in the Bonsai nursery.
Complete your visit to St. Mawgan by going over the bridge from the Japanese Garden to the local craft shop, which has a plethora of original hand made object d'art for you to peruse.
